Terms

The following is a list of important findability vocabulary terms:

  • Findability – ability of users to identify an appropriate website and navigate the pages of the site to discover and retrieve relevant information resources
  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization) – process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines
  • Emocard – tool used to measure emotional response in a usability test
  • Black Hat SEO – using techniques that are frowned upon like keyword stuffing, link farming, etc. to search optimize a site.
  • White Hat SEO – using proper techniques like emphasizing keywords to search optimize a site.
  • PET Design – stands for Persuasion, Emotion, and Trust, uses research-based techniques to leverage the science of persuasion, emotion, and trust to make websites more engaging, compelling, and effective.
  • Google Analytics – a free service offered by Google that generates detailed statistics about the visitors to a website
  • Google AdWords – Google’s flagship advertising product and main source of revenue.  AdWords offers pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, and site-targeted advertising for both text and banner ads.
  • Microformat – a web-based approach to semantic markup that seeks to re-use existing XHTML and HTML tags to convey metadata and other attributes. This approach allows information intended for end-users (such as contact information, geographic coordinates, calendar events, and the like) to also be automatically processed by software.
  • Google AdSense – an ad serving application run by Google Inc. Website owners can enroll in this program to enable text, image, and more recently, video advertisements on their websites. These advertisements are administered by Google and generate revenue on either a per-click or per-impression basis.
  • Viewzi Site Search (VSS) - a pilot program that takes the Viewzi search experience and embeds it on your website or blog. Your search results become highly visual, elegant and engaging!
  • Search Engine Marketing (SEM) – a form of Internet marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs) through the use of paid placement, contextual advertising, and paid inclusion.
